Oh boy do I really dislike Maximus. I found him to be childish and cruel to Artemis, never truly thinking of her as a person and instead raising her up to a status of a caged goddess for his own ego to be satisfied. He needed to have a heartfelt grovel at the end, which we did not get at all. Artemis, on the other hand, was wonderful. Cool, collected, and infinitely patient. I honestly wanted much better for her.

The other thing I disliked about this book was I found it lacked the realism (or at least semi-realism) of the other books. It was like a marriage of fairytale and romance book, which can be completely fine, but isn't what draws readers into the Maiden Lane series. Early morning barefoot strolls from a lady's companion desperate to keep her job? The constant Diana references? I just didn't find any of this so plausible nor romantic.

This was a decent little read. It was pretty fun, but definitely not my normal reading material.

I adore Artemis, and so much that I can begrudgingly love Maximus even though he is an idiot. Would definitely be 5 stars for me if the end weren't so sudden and Maximus hadn't come to his senses so late.

The most Batman-like of the series yet. I loved all of the additional details we got from side characters and the Duke of Wakefield was just as starchy and uptight as I expected. Artemis was a lovely FMC, and I enjoyed how strong willed and defiant she was.

I really hate mistress proposals and this book has that so. Just know that.

a little too many side characters and i didn’t like how they didn’t really reveal how the brother was falsely accused and make u read the next book instead to find out but otherwise a solid plot and romance was chill.
just remembered how the girl was so down to be this dudes mistress and the guy just kept being like no no i’m not marrying u for way too long and yea i had to take a half star off bc i hated that part so much

I read Duke of Midnight in December 2020 and was so confused because it was the first book that I read from the Maiden Lane series (and the first from Elizabeth Hoyt). I HIGHLY recommend reading this series in order to truly get the enjoyment. After having read books 1 to 5, and re-reading Duke of Midnight (in chronological order), I can definitely say that I LOVE, LOVE this book so much this time around since I was able to truly appreciate all the background, character history, and world building we had in the previous books to enjoy and understand Duke of Midnight and the actions of the main characters.

I’ve been so looking forward to reading (and getting the story) on Maximus, the Duke of Wakefield, and Artemis Greaves since Notorious Pleasures (Maiden Lane #2) and I just love how wonderful Elizabeth Hoyt writes her heroes. Hoyt’s heroes just gets better and better with each book and I am all here for it! I just LOVE Maximus and adore Artemis (probably my favorite heroine in the series so far) and how she wasn’t afraid to stand up to the hero and demanded his respect. Very much reminiscent of a historical (St. Giles) Batman but this is a Batman who was able to find everlasting love and that love changed him for all the better.

Overall, love this book so much! ❤️
