I was a little skeptical about reading this book, because I really disliked the hero as a secondary character in book 2 of the series.
But even though I decided to venture myself, because of the little glimpses we had about Artemis in book 6, and boy what a great thing I decided to give this one a go. It's no surprise that I enjoyed Artemis way more than the Duke. Even though they are both aristocrats, she's on the poor side and now is a companion to her rich cousin Penelope. So I felt the this book has one of my favorite trope different social classes.
The mystery part of the book left me a little upset because of how sudden everything was, I hoped the arc had a bigger importance, since we know about it since book 2, it could've been better build.
Now let's talk about the romance of the book.
I really enjoyed how they start to interact and the country party scenery is one of my favorites in historicals.
Their interacions were really fun specially the ones right at the beginning of the mornings.
I loved how he thought of her as he goddes, she truly was one in his life.
Their relationship was well built and I enjoyed all the turns it took. Won't say exactly what due to spoilers, but I felt their reactions and expectations were very belivable. And even though I don't want this in every difference social classe book, I can appreciate if it happens in one out of 100
However I felt the end rushed. And this is not specific for this book. All of the maide lane books are ending very abruptly and it does not help that the epilogue is not about this book, but the next one instead. That is something that it's sort of bugging me with the Maiden Lane series.
And please no more Penelope, I'm honestly sick of her, and would appreciate not to have her featured in the next books.

Artemis is working as a lady's companion to an extended cousin. When she ventures into a dangerous part of town with her cousin, they are saved by the Ghost of St. Giles. She finds a ring that belongs to the Ghost of St. Giles and has reason to believe that the Duke of Wakefield is masquerading as the Ghost of St. Giles. Artemis threatens to reveal Wakefield's secret identity if he doesn't help her rescue her twin brother, Apollo. For the past few years, Apollo has been imprisoned at Newgate for years for a crime that he claims he never committed. Artemis begins to act as Wakefield's mistress, and they fall in love. Wakefield claims that he cannot marry Artemis even though they love each other because he is a duke. This was a good set up for future books in the Maiden Lane series that feature Apollo and Wakefield's younger sister, Phoebe.

So, so, so good. I wasn’t planning to read this all in one day, but it happened so here we are. Artemis and Maximus are perfect. The pacing is spot on, and while Hoyt tends to get too deep into the thrills and action or the smut, this is the perfect balance of all three. It was all my favorites for a genre novel: no love/lust at first sight, wallflower heroine, advisories to lovers, and just a smattering of thrills. Good stuff, read it now.
