I loved Artemis and Maximus so much! They were Botha ugh strong characters who would go to the ends of the earth for the people they love.

The 6th book in the Maiden Lane series. The Duke and Artemis were introduced in book 2. Artemis has POV chapters in the previous book to set up their story.

Maximus is the most powerful Duke in the country and always tightly in control of everything. No one can stand their ground with him, until Artemis. She has been reduced to a spinster lady’s companion because of the ill fortunes of her family. Yet despite the trials of her life, she is still fiercely determined to save her brother. They are an even match of strength and determination.

They are brought together because of Lady Penelope. As her companion, Artemis has to follow her everywhere. Maximus decides to court Lady Penelope and invites her to his house party.

Through repeated small, private interactions, Maximus and Artemis develop an affection for each other.  As they fall in love Maximus thinks he can only have her as a mistress, because of his duty to his father’s legacy. The build up of feelings and emotional reveals feels genuine and the stakes add tension as their love affair starts to become public knowledge.

The Ghost plot moves along well. There’s a mix of hunting in St Giles and regular enquiries during the day. There are good twists and turns along the way to keep you guessing as to the murderer’s identity to the end.

Quality spice scenes. Full spice in chapters 11, 14, 15, and 18. My favourite spice of the series
