I was hooked from the start, but my interest waned near the end...it felt a little rushed/not as attentive to the characters as the beginning.
The ending also felt....abrupt.
HOWEVER.....I did like it.

Definitely a good bad. A lot of commentary on status, womanhood, assimilation and wealth.

Prose and narration were beautiful.

So like most books that are more character-driven and reflective it feels a bit lacking. The mystery element is ok but kinda a let down.

what is a language if not a culture, a mind, a life-long experience? i loved the bringing in of india/pakistan tensions + i love a pathetic protagonist.

also made me think of the ethicality of linguistics / anthro ling. much to think about.

I liked the first half of the book. The idea of the Centre intrigued me and the whole language learning was interesting. But then it got boring, weird and I found myself pushing through the book. The premise was good, but the characters and plot were unsatisfying.

Amazing commentary on colonialism, language and racism. Very reflective about the value we hold in non western voices, especially in story telling. Would recommend to anyone wanting to diversify their reading.

Listening to this as an audiobook made this more enjoyable I think due to the content of the book and the wonderful narrators. Would highly recommend going that route! However, I was a bit disappointed by the ending.
