I loved this book! It had a very intimate, personal tone that I loved. I feel like I could see the plot twists coming, but I loved the journey to get there. I also enjoyed how the protagonist has social critique interwoven into the story, and highlights conflicts about *how* one engages with social taboo, gender, caste systems, and classism.

I dug this, but it's not exactly a thriller. It has all the bones of a thriller, but it ends up asking the very interesting literary question of what would happen if the heroine of a thriller learned the shocking truth at the center of the novel. . .and then wasn't all that shocked by it?

Some really smart critiques on the intersections of race, class, and gender as well, and some moments that actually made me laugh out loud.

So maybe it's like lit fic in a thriller costume? Lit fic using a fake ID that SAYS it's a thriller so it can go to the bars? A thriller with a degree in literary theory?

eh. picked this up bc the premise was right up my alley, but after skimming through i was disappointed in the lack of actual commentary on the politics of translation and language learning. twist was good but vastly underutilized too, wish this had been more confident in its speculative premise/elements to not dwell so much on what felt like unfocused inconsequential navel-gazing at protag's privileged life

I don’t know how to review this without spoilers so here it is:
it was very difficult to get into this book as you’re approaching it from the point of view of a very entitled person. I understood the character but found it difficult to understand why I would continue to follow her journey. She is rich and self-interested and while she does seem to question some of the classist elements that surround the centre’s methodology/beginnings as well as its future, it was simply not enough to make this anything other than the beginning of a larger horror story. It feels like a prequel, essentially, that could lead to an incredibly fascinating, rich, and complex story. But lacking that follow up, I felt only disappointed. However, I deeply enjoyed this writer’s style which I think most definitely kept me reading. The twist of cannibalism wasn’t much of a twist so that alone did not keep me going though it may be the coal in the engine for some readers
overall, I look forward to reading other works by this author but found this book lacking in direction/compulsion

Also, fantastic audiobook reader! Highly recommend listening to this one if you choose to read it!
