I would’ve preferred more suspense.

2.5/5 - Short read with a good concept but the mystery reveal wasn't that mysterious. Add to that that nothing happened once the secret was out was a let down. Also, the woe is me immigrant character was privileged and it was hard to like her. Would not recommend

I liked the concepts in this book. It touched on some thought provoking ideas. I love the look into translations and wanted more of that. The writer’s look into the women in the novel seemed a bit surface level at times but I believe it’s intentional how some of the decisions go unexplained. I think the point is sometimes women do things when acting from an unseen (usually male or societal) force or pressure. I’m also disappointed in Naima’s development. Her relationship with Azeem seemed so out of character for her. I believe it was a reflection of this idea of giving into societal demands but it wasn’t right for her character. She seemed so strong willed and free spirited at the start of the novel, and if anything it would have made more sense for the narrator to have developed this way instead. I also think the ending was a bit abrupt, I wanted more explanation of what would be next. Overall I enjoyed it, it was a quick read with some fun, suspenseful scenes.

I could not stop reading this as I had to get to the reveal but I now wish I'd just stopped early on.

What an anticlimactic let-down of an ending
