I really liked this book- the story was compelling and interesting. I felt like the characters were developed, and flawed, reflective of endless spiralings I do myself. And the underlying plot took me by surprise.

I wanted to like this book but the second half really disappointed me. I thought the premise was very promising, but it quickly devolved into quasi-fourth wall breaking preaching and failing at "showing, not telling". Really a wasted opportunity for a "Yellowface" or "Crying in H Mart" story about integrity / appropriation, language / culture.

At the end of the book, I felt it wasn't done. There's no conclusion in my opinion. I did find the plot interesting, and with the read.
There's racially diverse characters, lgbtq and straight relationships. There's different cultures, and religions. I found that the different aspects enhanced the magical realism.
