READ TW'S BEFORE READING!

The first half was too slow, I feel like. I wanted to DNF, but bc I also wanted to know the ending, I kept reading. The last half was finished in the matter of a few days, so the pace definitely picks up towards the end.

I do have to say, that Beth and Hailey were annoying at times. Both acted like immature teenagers half the time (which is okay in Hailey, bc she is literally a teen, but Beth is too old to act like that).
A good example for that was when Beth
seriously expected Jonny to choose her before Hailey, like??? He know you for a few days and only slept with you once, he know Hailey for his WHOLE LIFE. You can't be mad at him, that he would choose Hailey.

The answer to the murder mystery was a bit surprising, but you could predict it towards the end. Still, not bad.

I definitely loved the attention the book brings to mmiw! Would have been nice to have an indigenous woman as a main character, too. ^^

Overall, good book, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to others.

This book had me hooked from the second I started it. It’s dark and parts are hard. Sometimes I would be reading and have to set down my kindle and take a breath to keep going. It’s really that good that you can’t stop. The different narratives are amazing. I am planning to read all of Chevy Steven’s books now. Im not really the biggest mystery/thriller fan usually but I’m hooked on her characters, the twists and how it hits hard about being a girl walking on a dark road

A story of women being murdered on a dark, desolate highway and the killer being on the loose, this book has so many twists and turns it’s unbelievable. Power, greed, deception, and downright disturbing sexual fantasies make this murder mystery so much more than just a whodunnit. The characters are raw and real and infinitely flawed. The killer is not who I thought it was going to be but I realized it wasn’t who I thought it was RIGHT before the twist. This book kept me guessing in the best way. Also, ACAB - cause this book…man.

This is a book I was extremely excited about as I’ve been interested in the Highway of Tears cases for a while. I find the setting beyond eerie and also heartbreaking.
This book was very well written and had a great plot line and good characters. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it wasn’t an absolute life changer (I’m trying to save 5 star reviews for absolute favorites). I’ve read tons of thrillers involving unsolved murders and small towns and the woods. I think the eeriness of the highway and the remoteness of the setting added something special. (Side note: I could never be as outdoorsy as even Beth who was a city girl….I would have fallen over and died like 5 mins into the woods). I liked the supernatural introduction and epilogue a lot, it was a super interesting POV. Also, obsessed with the dog Wolf.
I definitely recommend this for fans of thrillers and mysteries and/or fiction based on true crime.

Another great Chevy Stevens book!
This is the story of Hailey, who lost both of her parents and has to move in with her aunt and her husband, a local cop who locals not-so-lovingly call the Iceman.
Cold Creek, where they live, is infamous for the women that have disappeared along the highway, and Hailey's uncle trying to "keep her safe" is seriously impeding her teenage life. Until she realizes that he is keeping some big secrets and she runs away.
Then, the story follows Beth, a woman who lost her sister to the highway killer. Beth is now suffering from addiction and has given up her dreams and is hoping to figure out what happened.
While I will say that there were some minor plot points that seem oversimplified, I really enjoyed this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. Thank you to the author and netgalley for a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

The latest novel from Chevy Stevens, "Dark Roads," is loosely based on the Highway of Tears in British Columbia, Canada but according to the author's note, she changed the setting to Cold Creek Highway out of respect to the victims.

For decades, people have been warned about Cold Creek Highway and its penchant for luring women to its death. When Hailey McBride realizes she has to extricate herself from her uncle's home, she thinks of the unforgiving wilderness. With the help of her best friend, she makes a plan to escape into the woods, hoping her survival skills will be enough to stay alive and that people will assume she was another victim of the killer. For the better part of the year, she stays undiscovered, known only to her best friend and a stray dog, until someone too close to home arrives in town, luring her out of hiding. How can she go back to hiding knowing the dangers that are out there?

I've had a difficult time committing and finishing any novels these days so I will say this was a good novel that kept me engaged until the end. Whether or not it was particularly suspenseful is debatable. Everything is laid out on the table for you so it wasn't quite a thrilling ride. I thought the writer did an excellent job of constructing nature scenes and Hailey's determination to survive in the wilderness, so that worked for me. The beginning of the novel was also very good, stronger for me than the second half. There were a few choppy transitions that made it hard to follow along, so I wish some scenes were a little clearer. I thought the epilogue also confused me more than it added to the plot.
