I wish I read this before I saw the movie because all I thought about the whole time was Kevin Bacon.
This was a really refreshing and quick read!! I loved Kehlmann's exploration of consciousness and inter-dimensionality in a horror context. Its comparable to I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid, but in a less mindbending way.

Theres definitely derealization themes and hallucinations in this book so that's a warning that I wish I knew walking into this but the book is very well written. I think my only real gripe over any of it is I guess that I wanted more. Not sure what that really would've looked like though. As a thriller novel its short, only being about 100 pages with about 200 words on every page. But its still gripping, holding onto you in the way the land holds onto the characters.

This kind of meandered along. I'm not sure I understood what happened. Is this book a translation?
I'm sure I found this for either horror fans or specifically fans of house of leaves. The house defying the laws of physics smacks of Danielewski. But maybe the novella medium is too brief to truly engage me and paralyze me. If we followed this writer unwinding his mental fortitude, we did so in the span of pages where we watched Zampano, then Navy, then Johnny himself unwind over nearly a thousand. It's not apples to apples. Still, it wasn't UNscary but it's hard to be AS scary in such a condensed form.

Au programme : un huis clos angoissant, un espace-temps mouvant et une mise en abîme au coeur même de l'histoire. Le récit joue subtilement, tout du long, avec les limites de la perception. Très original ! j’en redemande !

At first I was underwhelmed, but the tension and creepy built up so very quickly (it’s only 100 pages or so, after all). I couldn’t put it down. There might be some meaning I’m missing, but I loved it anyways. read ittttttt!! (I recommend a creepy playlist alongside for atmospheric effect)
