I didn’t actually start crying until the very last page oh gods. For about sixty percent of the book I felt like I was too mushy-brained to understand any of Crow’s parts but by part 3 I got it and I just wanted to note some quotes that really stuck with me so that future me can look back on this book and remember it well.

‘Connoisseurs, they were, of how to miss a mother. My absolute pleasure. Just be good and listen to birds. Long live imagined animals, the need, the capacity. Just be kind and look out for your brother.’
‘I tell tales of our family friend, the crow. My wife shakes her head. She thinks it’s weird that I fondly remember family holidays with an imaginary crow, and I remind her that it could have been anything, could have gone any way, but something more or less healthy happened. We miss our Mum, we love our Dad, we wave at crows. It’s not that weird.’

I’m obviously never been married nor have I ever lost a spouse or immediate family member so I didn’t pick this up to feel less alone but I do feel just a little bit closer to people who have through this book. So beautiful and eccentric and excellent debut novel Max Porter!

my dad died and like 2 months later i read this book, 10/10 experience would recommend
Where are the fire engines? Where is the noise and clamour of an event like this? Where are the strangers going out of their way to help, screaming, flinging bits of emergency glow-in-the-dark equipment at us to try and settle and save us? There should be men in helmets speaking a new and dramatic language of crisis. There should be horrible levels of noise, completely foreign and inappropriate for our cosy London flat.
