So, the only explanation I’ll take for Elena and Stefan being in love with each other after like, a week and talking only once or twice is that she’s the reincarnation of Katherine or something. Because otherwise, that’s ludicrous.
Also, the scene where Stefan is angry and telling Elena “your white throat” and the like——- Stephenie Meyer completely ripped that off from L.J Smith with her scene of Edward in Twilight saying “as if you could outrun me” etc. etc. because this book was written in the 90’s. How did no one notice this? Cause I’d be pissed if I were L.J Smith.
Also I know it’s an older book, but these high schoolers don’t even talk or act like high schoolers, besides Matt and maybe Caroline.
I will say it kept my interest to the point where I finished it and am reading the next one, so...there’s that.

I did read the first book after being exposed to the television show. As you may know, the book is nothing like the show. I loved the show. I rewatch it sometimes even. Also, the first book was so poorly written and annoying I didn’t even bother to keep going with the series. I may have missed a good alternate story but I don’t think so from what I’ve heard from other readers.

This read like your typical YA fantasy novel: nothing too interesting, nothing too ingenius. I read this because of the tv-series's massive success and thought to see if the literary original was any better than the show. Unfortunately, I think the tv-adaption did a better job of creating tension and suspense because the novel fell fairly flat in those areas. This was written in the same vampire craze on the YA market as Twilight, Vampire Academy, and the House of Night series so it definitely caters to those who really appreciate that genre, but there sure is nothing new under the sun, is there? That being said, I did give this and "OK" rating. After all, I finished it. It had a tight plot that took the reader from A to B without too much hassle and it did a better job than Twilight in making vampires seem less trustworthy.
Holy shit what the fuck is this lol. This is living breathing walking proof I had absolutely no taste as a teen and literally loved everything I read. What the shit is this??
Holy fuck. Elena is just terrible and if she was a guy she'd be labeled a predatory manipulative creep. How is this even ok? She's just awful like that's her whole personality, to be awful.
I can't believe I'm saying this but this is worse than twilight. I literally read this to shit on twilight being like "oh yeah look at all Steph copied from this in her 'dream'" but bro... It's so trash. Omfg. The plot is like nothing. The characters I could fuck less about. I'm literally not even done with the audiobook and I don't wanna finish lol. I'm just done. I was gonna read the whole series but there's no way. Even if the writing got better, Smith has ruined the characters and plot too much already. And I can't bring myself to care enough to waste my time.
Wow just awful. Terrible. Don't read this if you're considering it. Let it die back in the 90s/00s where I should have left it.

Definitely a guilt pleasure book. I’m not a big fan of the main character, the writing, or the insta love in this story. However, it was a quick read with a fast moving plot. I do like the show more than the book. 😵
Read the first book in the 8th grade because I worked in the library and it looked interesting! then flash forward & now it's one of the most famous shows on TV! <3 awesome!
