I hate myself for liking this, but as sheer brain candy, it wasn't bad. A friend loves the TV show, so I took a look at it. I wanted more Damon - he was by far the most interesting character - and much less Stefan (whiniest, most obnoxious, stupid existential character I have ever come across). If I was like that at 15, please shoot me.
I'm giving up on this book. couldn't finish it wich is really rare for me! maybe i'll give an other try in a few months... maybe
I usually love L.J smith's books but this one wasn't written as well as her others. And, if you are reading these books because you like the show, they do not follow the show at all. I never like shows better than the books but in this case the show is done better. Elena's character in the book is kinda annoying to me. Stefen is also a bit wimpy than I would like him to be. Maybe the series gets better as it goes on.
I had bought this bind up years ago but never ending up reading it. The tv series wasn't my type of show but was still vaugly interested in giving the first two books ago. But meh. This was a case of when I liked the adaption more than the books. Not my cup of tea but probably should have known that going in.
This book isn’t great, but I had a lot of fun reading it. As a TVD fan, seeing these versions of the characters was so interesting. It was fun comparing it to the show. Would I suggest you read it? No, not really - especially if you never watched the show. But would I keep reading the series? Yes, probably…
I must say it. I bought this book in February 2010 because the owner of my favorite bookstore recommend it to me, understanding that I became a real fan-pire. Well, I wanted to read it too, but I first thought: "What vampire story could possibly be in a book published in 1991?!"
But when I started to read it, I was like "Whoa! This is the first modern vamp story..". And it really was. I could see it from a mile away. This is the original story between a vampire and a teen girl. I mean, it kinda started just like Twilight. Girl moves in her hometown, meets a mysterious boy in her class, etc. But then the plot goes entirely different. A lot of action. You just start to breath again when you finish The Awakening, and then you stop breathing when you start The Struggle.
Practically, The Awakening means Elena's discovery (that Stefan Salvatore, the gorgeous, new, hottie guy is a vampire!!!). The Struggle means Elena's "fight" against Damon, and finally dying - OhMyGosh...
Lucky me I had the idea to buy The Fury & The Struggle, too. Because I couldn't stop reading! I read this bind-up in about 5 days - that's because I had prep at Maths (the Olympiad was coming) and other school stuff when you start the second semester.
I give this book a definitely 5/5 stars! You should better go and get it, because it's a book love-able by every YA fan. Congratulations to L.J. Smith for an awesome vampire series.

great series. the show is alot different. i think this book wasnt as good as the others, because the characters weren't as close.
I loved this book when I was a teenager and since the series is beginning soon, I decided to re-read it.
My daughter loved it and shes 11.

I wanted to like this book as much as I've liked others, but just couldn't.
It was hard to feel anything but distaste for Elena in the beginning. Her self-centered attitude and manipulation of others made it difficult to relate to her. And instead of finding myself understanding her reasons for wanting to be with Stefan, I found her almost stalker-like. Spreading rumors about herself, trying so hard to get his attention and crying when she doesn't -- it was all a little too childish for me, especially since she's supposed to be 17 at this point in the story.
Towards the middle/end of "The Struggle", I found myself liking her more, but as soon as I got to the end, I was irritated with her again.
The suspense is well written, however, and I really liked Matt, Bonnie, Meredith, and Stefan's characters. Damon I think I could have done without, but maybe I'll like him more as the series progresses? I know there needs to be an antagonist, but he felt a little more sleazy to me than a tall, dark, and dangerous option number two.
I've already started "The Fury and Dark Reunion" because I'm a glutton for punishment and ever the optimist.
