Entering my reviews over from my old Goodreads profile I unearthed recently...here are some super sappy thoughts from 2011-era 16-year-old Claire!
I'm so torn about these books. I read them because I watch the show, and the show's completely different. But the way L.J. Smith writes about love is very real and honest, and that really resonated with me.

This was another book I read because I was interested in seeing the show, and I would rather have show spoilers than book spoilers, so I decided it would be best to read the book first.
This book was entertaining, though incredibly cheesy. I thought Twilight by Stephanie Meyer was the cheesiest you could get without writing a horrible book. The Vampire Diaries was a new extreme.
It wasn't terrible, that's for sure. I will most likely read the sequel if I can find it at a slightly discounted price. I will say that the storyline/characters were faulty at times, and there were some holes in the story. It was very much a teenie novel, not to be rude. I give it a three-star rating simply because though it wasn't the best writing I have ever seen, I did make it through the book and finished it happy.

I guess I'm just prejudist because I watched the show first, but I gotta say I like the TV storyline better.
I liked this book alot and cant wait to read the next ones!
Sucked so bad in the beginning it was like fanfiction. Got better towards the end. Not a perfect book by any means, but it's not [i:]as[/i:] terrible as I assumed. 2.5 stars -- I round up cos I'm nice. :)
I definitely made the mistake of entering the book assuming it was like the show. There was very little the same. I treated it like it’s own entity, and I was fine from there. A good read if you can see it for its own story.
Elena is very shallow in this book, not much substance to her at all. Stefen doesn’t seem to know what he’s doing half the time, either. He seems to go back and forth from what he believes in. And of course most of the vampire lore is either cheesy or not explained well.
