Lindsay's beautifully-descriptive language compensates for a story that peaks in Act 1.

"Be careful how you express yourself, Mr. Lumley. Not crime. Mystery if you lie. A very different matter."

This is a very odd story - one that I thought would be brought with a satisfying ending but, instead, you are left with the aftermath of a horrible day in February in 1900. You read as the ripples of the horrible day spread out to affect the staff, other students and many others in the town. You, like them, wonder what happened and how it all came to be. How could this possible....happen?

There are a few hints in the story as to what...might have happened but much you are left to wonder or decide for yourself. I appreciated the forward that told you to stop reading if you didn't know the story. I went in knowing nothing and I'm glad I did - but I'm looking forward to seeing the show (and maybe finding the movie) that may fill in some gaps. I enjoyed the mystery.

A quick, enjoyable mystery. It didn't hook me, but I appreciated it and do think it worked very well without the "final" chapter.

Really interesting premise but absolutely lost me after the first couple of chapters. The framed narrative was cool and creepy though!

Global Read Challenge 42: Australia

This was a fun quick mystery. It had a tint of supernatural, and it was interesting to read that Lindsay's original version had a very supernatural ending that the publishers made her cut. Of course I wish more had been resolved, but I didn't get the sense that Lindsay was dodging making a decision the way I sometimes do when a mystery isn't resolved completely.
