tough to compare to the original. :( thought-provoking though?? I wouldn't recommend necessarily but it'd be nice to have someone to talk to about it.

I loved this retelling and loved that it gave Julia so much more dimension. Maybe was a little slow to begin with but once past that I was very invested. I felt the ending was apt and definitely an excellent callback to the end of the original.
dark reflective fast-paced

“it made her conscious, as she’d never been before, that thoughtcrime was nothing to do with crime. it wasn’t even a prelude to real crime”

very interesting to read essentially another side of a favourite book, really does show how narrow winston’s understanding of the world was… julia had some pretty solid critiques of his character, particularly with self importance and avoidance of personal responsibility. it’s obviously such an established and known world in fiction that it’s tricky to expand it but it does still offer a new perspective

Such an easy five stars! Newman pays a beautiful homage to Orwell’s original, adding electric detail and depth to both the world, and Julia as a character.

This is the worst fan-fiction crap I've ever attempted to read.  Sandra Newman owes George Orwell an apology.
