perhaps I'm not smart enough to fully grasp this book or topic. This felt like horror and I felt a low level of repulsion and confusion about how this was feminist as I read. I would love to learn from someone who read this what they liked or how it was excellent, and I mean that in a non-sardonic way.

Retelling of Orwell's 1984 but from Julia's viewpoint (she was Winston Smith's lover).  If you have not read 1984 do that first or you will be confused.  Apparently this retelling does use the original dialogue from the book while expanding the character of Julia. Still brings across the dystopian world of Big Brother.  Parts drag a little but overall if you like 1984 I think this is a good companion novel.

I probably would have enjoyed this better if I had liked the original 1984 more.
Clever writing, giving us an insight into women’s diffentiated treatment under the authoritarian regime of Oceania (the no-sex league, queer relationships, mandatory insemination programs, sponsered sexual abuse by higher ups like Whitehead…) and a more critical view of Winston as clueless and bumbling. I found this book more interesting as a thought experiment than an actually enjoyable read (I especially didn’t appreciate Julia’s initial treatment of Vicky, poor girl with a massive crush and the graphic torture descriptions). While there were some rough patches, I quite liked the end : the fear-reaching hold of propaganda, the reveal when meeting BB, the entire regime reduced to a "game of make-believe" ruled by fear

I found 1984 difficult to read - quite boring in the middle - but I hoped that this more modern take would be more uplifting. Instead I just found it sordid. Definitely not suitable for younger readers.
