wow, i didn’t expect to give this book 4 stars. it was great, the story line made complete sense at the end and i liked how the author let the reader stay a bit confused until the last 30 pages. it actually also has a nice lesson about understanding ones inner self vs outer self. was it creepy? kind of, but i think its suitable for the age group it was written for.
Oh, boy. I had high expectations for this book because I am a sucker for anything that involves time manipulation or other worlds. This has been pitched as a dark YA version of Groundhog's Day, but I found it very hard to connect with the characters, care about their fates, or even the mystery. Pessl does an excellent job of eliciting descriptive imagery, and the premise is fascinating. However, the execution just didn't work for me. If I could relate more to the characters or get into their heads a bit more, I feel like I would have been able to rate this higher, but ultimately, it became a struggle to finish the book.

3.5/5 ✨
This book is definitely out of my comfort zone. I enjoyed the time travel aspect of it. Sometimes I found it a bit confusing and it just kept digging a bigger hole. The reveal was something alright but I still have a lot of doubts! I’m very confused 😂 i just keep thinking The Vote, The vote, the vote...
SPOILERS
what happend with Neverworld! Was it real was it her imagination? I think the latter. But the whole scene with Martha at the end made me think otherwise. I just cant believe Martha went through all pf that just to save Beatrice... seemed suspicious! They could’ve resolved everything in 3 wakes if they were just HONEST! ALSSOOOO I don’t understand why she ended up living even when she chose Martha? Was it because she was selfless? I do understand why they ended up picking her she was the one that kept saving them over and over. Anyway this book was definitely something. I just don’t get why they had to bring the whole Chicken girl death, I think it would’ve been more interesting if it was dealt with in another way 🤷♀️
Also I thought the begging was soooo boring. I it annoyed me so much how uncooperative they were! They kept doing stupid things over and over. The plot didn’t actually start till page 120something.

Inception plus quantum immortality equals this masterpiece.
This is the book I was waiting for Pessl to write after the beautiful promise (but weakly concluded) Special Topics. (Night Film was NOT the book I was waiting for.) This isn’t perfect, but she is a generally stunning wordsmith, the characters — older teens, a year out from HS — sound like actual people, and the plot is strange and the setting unique.
Plus it has the quote I’ll be putting into all my graduation gifts this year, and possibly for years to come:
We are all anthologies. We are each thousands of pages long, filled with fairy tales and poetry, mysteries and tragedy, forgotten stories in the back no one will ever read.
The most we can do is hold out our hands and help each other across the unknown.
(4.5 rounding up because why not)
