The first 50% of the book was hard for me to read, but the latter half was gold.

The build up for this book felt really slow. The mystery was good but it took a long time to find all the clues to the point that it was a bit difficult to remember them all once you needed to put it together.

This is my favorite so far of the Mirror Visitor series. I'm exhausted so I don't have much energy to write a concise review of this, but I do have to say it's oddly amazing and very informative that I'm studying history at the same time as reading this series. I can tell that Dabos has an appreciation for the study of history, as well as the distribution of it. She cleverly crafts a world dependent upon censorship and obedience, but through characters like Ophelia and Thorn, shows how history cannot be silenced forever.
As for Ophelia's journey this book, I continue to be awed in how resilient and steadfast she is despite the many horrors she goes through. What I particularly loved is that even though she has new powers, they don't manifest in the way that she wants, and that makes sense. She's not a vicious, vengeful person, so of course her claws wouldn't manifest when she gets angry.
Another aspect I loved is the abundance of side characters. Blaise is so kind and sweet, I loved seeing how the manifestation of not necessarily a power, but a jinx, has affected him so much. Octavio was a really nice surprise! I wasn't sure how to feel about him, and then I ended up absolutely loving him. I hope to see him in the next book.
Thorn and Ophelia's relationship this book was so interesting. I loved how hesitant the both of them were, and I loved seeing how their relationship dynamic somewhat switched. Ophelia ended up being the one desperate to do anything for Thorn, whereas Thorn was (even more so) distant. I love them so much. <3
I have to say I didn't care for Victoria's storyline, but it was so brief I have barely anything to actually complain about. All it did was cement the fact that I am very terrified of whoever God is!
I'm still confused about how this story is going to end, but I have one book left and all I need to do now is find the time in between reading 600+ page theoretical books about history for grad school. (I'm missing undergrad so hard right now and it's been less than one week)
Quote time!
"It wasn't she who was the kid. It was the whole of humanity. They were all, absolutely all, kept in a state of infantilism by God and his Guardians."
"At what moment do we cease to be human and become objects?"
"I make a lamentable husband, but I permit no one, particularly him, to persecute my wife."
