incredibly written, save for overcrowding of characters, with an uncomfortable finale that echoes ugly truths about our carceral system and the way we treat survivors

I devoured this book! I, like Bodie, needed to get to the bottom of this mystery. It’s not a mystery at all really though, just a reminder to every female reader just how dispensable we women are.

Very well-written! Impactful. But too slow-paced to keep me riveted.

I'm not that into mystery as a genre, but this book was incredibly well written and drew me in quite well.  It's left me with somewhat mixed feelings at the end, but it was an enjoyable read at least. While the CW list is quite a lot, I would say it's not as bad as you might think. I put them as graphic as they are explicitly described, but I personally didn't think it was all to bad.

The writing is among the best of recent books I’ve read. Makkai is talented. I do feel as if there are moments when I wasn’t sure what to think of
the examination of the #MeToo movement and the acknowledgement of widespread sexual harassment and assault perpetrated by men against cis women and the protagonist’s feelings about her ex Jerome’s cancelation. Perhaps the gray area is the point.
I was also disappointed about the way that
Brit and Alder disappeared from the final act and how Jeff sort of takes over the role of coconspirator. The “love story,” however brief, felt quite tidy.
Still, I felt sucked into this plot, alongside of Makkai’s writing.
