edit: the more i think about it the less i like this book. probably wont give the second one a try:/

an interesting enough world and plot, i wanted to learn a bit more about the actual world itself. enjoyed the politics of the world and definitely felt like more pages couldve been dedicated to that, but with the mc not knowing anything either, i get it. the romance made sense with the back story and didnt feel too rushed or forced. a little cheesy at times, but a nice easy and entertaining read between the s.o. bookclub picks. definitely younger, fluffier vibes than intense fantasy it tries to be. will give the second book a try, hoping for more world background/building. kind of weirdly focused on the dresses she wears...

This book is a really interesting start to the series. I rarely enjoy reading books that use amnesia as a plot device, but this was an exception. I found myself entranced by the world building and magic systems. Like Romy, I desperately wanted to find out more about the world I had been transported to.

I can’t put my finger on what it is about this story, but it felt very unique and has stood out to me among my fantasy reads. I am absolutely wrapped up in this adventure, and I’m really excited to read the next one!

I will be honest, I was actually quite scared of this book. I love KA Tucker so much and I was so excited for her to go into a new genre, but I am always nervous when authors jump ship to explore. I'M EXCITED FOR THEM BUT LIKE, YKNOW? But go off and do new things, I will be here.

Anyways, LOL. I would've finished this in a few days if it weren't for the fact that Tiktok has literally burnt me out with Fantasy titles. I haven't even read any of them and I am exhausted from the genre. So I took my time and moved through this slowly and I am glad I did.

Romy is thrust into a world she has no idea exists. She doesn't even know she's being thrust into it. One day she is a thief in the streets of New York and the next thing she knows she is in a world in which New York doesn't exist, being accused of murdering her betrothed's parents.... who just so happen to be King and Queen. Zander is as furious as he is betrayed by a woman he thought he loved, but Romy has no idea what "other Romy" did or why she did it and is trying to convince everyone that she is different from who they think she is.

As she learns how to navigate this new world, she is also learning how to navigate who she might have been and it is not easy. Romy is trying to befriend people who do not trust her, and get information from them without giving herself away. This world is no place for her but the more she learns, the more she thinks it might be?

I really and truly loved this. I thought this was going to be another From Blood and Ash book and I was THRILLED WHEN IT WASN'T. I DID NOT WANT A REPEAT. Romy and Zander were so spicy to follow and I loved that it was framed as almost a story within a story. Yes, we have Romy to follow, but learning about past/other Romy is another story in itself. I think part of why I thought this went over so well was because it felt like it read more of a contemporary with a lot of fantasy elements to it rather than the usual fantasy. It is very easy to latch onto the main character as, much like you are feeling, she is also a human being forced into a non-human world.

This is a sloooooow burn. The slowest of burns. I cannot wait for more just to see how this could explode because I CAN FEEL IT. I SENSE IT COMING. Give me more, please. Give me it.

I think this might be good for a reader who is not a fantasy reader but is trying to be? It is not hard to wrap your mind around at all and once you get about 25% of the way into it you fly through the rest.
