I really liked this one! Both our main characters were likeable and they way they were acting and their motivations felt pretty realistic to the situations they were in. Romy in particular was really fun to read from, and I enjoyed getting her perspective and seeing how her background helps her in this new world and situation she finds herself dumped in. She didn’t feel overly immature, and although she’s strong, it didn’t feel like a superficial strength that’s shoe-horned in so can be a girlboss. Zander is less interesting to me, but that may be because we don’t get his POV, although I didn’t have any major problems with him. The side characters were also pretty strong for me and I liked seeing the growth of their relationships with heroine.
The world was pretty fun and I liked the vampire/witch/elf vibe that was going on. There was some pretty heavy worldbuilding going on because of the nature of the plot, so if info-dumping bothers you you might struggle with this one because a major part of this book is learning about the world with our heroine. Personally, I never really felt bored because I thought the history of the world was pretty cool and the political machinations were interesting. The writing style wasn’t overly flowery, but I thought things were described well and it flowed in a way that kept me engaged with the story.
Overall I think this was a really strong enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance that has a bit more of a focus on the fantasy, which I like, particularly in the first book of a series. There’s certainly an attraction between the characters because of their connection and I liked their chemistry, but I also felt things weren’t progressing too quickly. This felt more realistic considering what’s going on in the plot, especially because of what Romy is having to grapple with. This book left me excited for the next one and I see a lot of promise with this series!

Too much "intrigue" and not enough action for me personally. From Blood and Ash vibes but I didn't enjoy it as much- won't be reading the rest of the series. For what it's worth- I did like "The Simple Wild" by the same author (contemporary story).

I would have loved more setup for Romy, so we could understand more of the why behind her decisions but this was so gooood
