These are cute cozy mysteries, but the ending for both was surprisingly similar, and I don’t know if I like that it’s happened twice now. Sure, there aren’t a lot of ways a cozy mystery usually ends, but the template felt almost too exact for my tastes.
However, the rest of this book was fun. I liked that Kappes recaps the first book, so these could be read in almost any order, and it’s still very similar in camp and style to Schitt’s Creek. The plot is light even though themes and topics aren’t while the shenanigans are wild for small-town Kentucky.
May is a fun main character, but I don’t really get the will-they-won’t-they relationship with Hank. I like her and look forward to reading more about what she’s going to get up to and what other funky things are going to go down in Normal. Fingers crossed the next book shakes things up a little more.
