I feel so confused after reading this book. The ending was so Abrupt... I have to sit on it and think about it. I listened to the audio book, I want to go back and reread the last few pages.

Giving 5 stars even though the ending definitely could’ve been different.

Here are my thoughts:

I think the dynamic between mother and daughter grieving together and separately was well written. Even if it wasn’t blatantly spelled out for the reader how the mother in this story grieved, I could personally see it.

I really thought Melanie should’ve survived but could’ve gone “missing”. The only reasoning for me with this concept is because it would’ve created a second book to Horrid. It could go any number of ways, like Jane searching for Melanie and trying to save her, having her ghost sis helping/not helping.

I don’t typically do horror books but I really enjoyed this one. Very creepy, psychological… and dare I say it, real-like book?!

this book was so so good, i love a good mystery/thriller, and i’m still dipping my toe into the horror genre and this was such a good start. jane and ruth had to move back to ruth’s hometown after ruth’s husband and jane’s dad passed away. they had to move into ruth’s passed mothers house, north manor. there were many many rumors about this house and ruth actually vowed to never come back but never say never i guess.

to take a quick break i would like to mention that besides the scary parts i really did live the relationships in this book, jane and the new friends she made and that little budding romance were so sweet, and while i don’t usually like those type of relationships in my mystery books it was nice to read about.

there is also a girl that is bullying jane upon her arrival, her sister is very sick from something that happened when she was younger. now one day jane goes to a party and her friends end up telling her everything she thought about the house wants true, and something really bad happened. she once had a sister names jemina rose and she was accidentally killed by falling into a whole in the backyard (which is why ruth vowed to never come back) and the girl she was playing with was her bully’s sister.

her bully tried to come to her house and get something because her sick sister killed herself after she found out jane and ruth came back to the house but we see jemina rose come back and kill the girl and we find out that she was doing all the creepy things in the house, and killed ruth (the deep sleep). i also just realized this book is also a bit paranormal.

overall really nice book, can’t wait to dive into this genre more
