The writing, probably because of translation, can be a bit confusing to differentiate the characters when there is dialogue between multiple people. The book and plot really pick up in the end and the payoff was worth it. It just takes a little bit of time to get there which can be a slog.

One sentence went on for two pages! Dialogue is separated by commas and when new person speaking is indicated by a capital letter. My brain couldn’t get over it. The whole first part of the book that I did read was just him picking out what movie to watch 😅

Senti tudo e o meu cérebro continua a mil. Adoro a ironia e o sentido de humor. Adoro quando ele manda asneiras no meio do nada. Às vezes dava me a ouvir a voz dele a narrar a história.

I wanted to read The Double because I very much enjoy the 2013 film 'Enemy' which was adapted from this novel and it did not disappoint. The Double is about a history teacher who stumbles upon his doppelganger as a background extra in a movie which leads him into an obsessive drive to find out his name. Saramago's almost spoken-word like style of writing did take a which to get use to because once you're used to it it flows really well and the story glides off the page.
