A more classic sci-fi “what is the meaning of life” story written in an interesting, fresh way. Some of the themes I didn’t jive with but over all a fun read.
I think I read it too fast and there are some plot inconsistencies (in my head). Overall really enjoyed it! Mish mash of physics, philosophy, and suspense.

Ascension by Nicholas Binge is a fast, compelling read that blends science fiction, horror, and techno-thriller elements into one intriguing package. The story follows an expedition to a mysterious mountain that suddenly appears in the middle of the ocean, told through a series of letters from a physicist who is part of the mission. What hooked me most—beyond the strange, otherworldly premise—was the way the book explores the tension between science and religion. The main character, raised with faith but grounded in science, wrestles with what he's seeing and what he believes, creating a thoughtful dynamic that never gets too heavy-handed or preachy.
Alongside the high-concept mystery is a more intimate storyline about grief, love, and personal loss. That emotional undercurrent adds real weight to the narrative, and there were moments when I wasn’t sure which storyline I was more invested in—the bizarre, mind-bending exploration or the protagonist’s painful reflections. Binge does a great job balancing the two and keeps the pages turning with a gradually unfolding mystery that sticks the landing. It’s not the most groundbreaking novel I’ve ever read, but it’s definitely one of the more entertaining and thought-provoking books I’ve read lately.
