A tense and creepy sci-fi horror mystery with a great premise and a constant undercurrent of suspense and paranoia.
The format and framing device of found letters is more interesting in concept than execution - in practise, not much is done with the epistolary form; you can call them letters, but these are just passages of prose with cliffhangers at the end of each chapter.
The characters are fun but often fall into melodramatic roles delivering clunky exposition between the action, and the horror is ultimately undercut by overexplanation by the end and some tired tropes underpinning everything.
The most effective parts of the book are the flashbacks to a tragedy from the protagonist's past, the horror more relatable for being mundane rather than supernatural, but there are some page-turning action sequences keeping the main plot moving.
Uktimately it's a good read -the author's enthusiasm for the central conceit will keep you reading through the clunkier elements of characterisation and dialogue.

Despicably bad. I was recommended this book by New Scientist, I will no longer be doing so. Horribly written, there was promise in the novelty of some ideas but those are squandered in this atrocious garbage fire of a book.

I didn’t like the letter format, it made it kinda boring and I never felt intrigued to pick it up
