As hooks, may she rest in power & peace, herself describes it, this is a “self-help” book we all should be reading under this ongoing oppressive capitalist world we are forced to live in. By entangling the issue of mental health experienced particularly by Black women as the center of her audience, but broadly every oppressed groups of people worldwide as she confirmed in the embedded interview script in the last part of the book, with the larger global anti-Black system, hooks underscores how our mental and physical health is strongly tied to the political. Through her consistent cited works on feminism, hooks poignantly articulates how gendered-based oppression must be viewed as patriarchal violence. Without ending sexism, specifically the one constantly directed at Black women, none of us would be liberated. hooks also attempts a holistic take by reminding readers on our, with specific mention of Black communities, relationship with the nature. To love the nature is also part of loving ourselves as we are part of the nature herself too. Indeed, by constantly challenging the colonial binary ways of thinking like separating our mind and body or our being and the nature, hooks asserts decolonizing paradigm too, in addition to her feminist lens and discourse. hooks’ works, including this book which was written in the early 90’s, remains relevant to our today’s realities in 2022.

The most affirming self-help book I’ve read as a Black woman.

bell hooks work is so important for US. I gained a deeper understanding of how the collective anguish of being a Black woman impacts my mental health as well as a lot of practical methods for leading a life of love, communion, care of self, truth-telling forgiveness and recovery. Will definitely revisiting and wish I could’ve discovered this book sooner!

WOW. This should be required reading. My first introduction to Bell Hooks’ work and it did not disappoint.

SISTERS OF THE YAM: Black Women and Self-Recovery by bell hooks was my first book by her and it was amazing! This book was originally published in 1994 and I listened to the audiobook of the second edition which came out in 2005 narrated by Adenrele Ojo. This book is still extremely relevant today. She discusses how Black women are assaulted by racism and sexism and how their emotional health suffers. She also offers insights and strategies on how Black women can empower themselves. This is a daily practice that is still needed in 2022. I loved the addition of the interview with hooks at the end. I’m so eager to read more of her work now.
