I kept falling asleep reading the ebook so switched to audio and it still didn’t hold my attention. Maybe will revisit in the future.
i saw the bad reviews and still decided to give this book a chance. very stupid on my part.
— the book is horribly paced.
within the first 50 pages kidan has been enrolled into uxlay, moved into her family's house, and is terrorizing susenyos. it happened so fast that i had whiplash. keep in mind, this is including an entire prologue. it was so rushed and so sloppy but truly sets you up for what the rest of the book will be like.
continuing with plot issues, the book is a perfect example of telling you and not showing you. often times a character would do something, and there would be a block of text reiterating the action and explaining its purpose. like for example: she has a recording and copies it onto another device. she then takes the recording and plays it for someone. they attempt to take it, but the recording is already deleted. the author then follows up with an entirely separate paragraph explaining why thats the exact reason the character copied the recording earlier. DUH?
the story also raises and ignores so many questions. there's one part when kidan is trying to decipher if her teacher is a vampire or not, finally concluding that, because his hair is LONG and hair is "alive," then he must be human. okay. so do the vampire's hairs not grow? wtf does this mean?
— the characters are not fully fleshed out. at all.
they are all cliches. all of them. they are so surface-leveled that its nearly impossible to connect with them.
kidan herself hardly connects with them, and even when she thinks of how much she loves her friends, it feels disingenuous.
kidan herself is the most ANNOYING character. i get that the writer wanted her to be morally gray, but it wasn't done well. she is simply annoying and weird. there's one scene where she intentionally bangs her head against a stairwell, while looking (spoiler) in the eye with the intent to show them how "serious business" she meant and it was /so/ corny.
she makes stupid decisions, is easily swayed, jumps to conclusion after conclusion after conclusion. she gives away her cards and goes against her own beliefs. ex: she receives a message detailing which houses not to trust and why. she plans to befriend someone from that house, acknowledges she has to keep a close eye on them, but when that person asks for the ONE thing the message told her they would want, she doesn't bat an eye and agrees?
— the enemies to lovers relationship
very stupid. very childish. childish interactions. childish bickering. held no water. was pretty much enemies to instalust. it was all very stupid.
there is so much more but i'm done typing. i'm going to go and read an actual good book now. byeee <3
