I DNF’d about 60% of the way in. Not because of the content, but because I need a break from fantasy.

It’s an incredible and unique read though, with innovative world building, and unique lore. Though rooted in some Ethiopian themes, the author makes the characters and plot accessible to everyone. I loved the progression of the character’s relationships, which was thoughtful and unhurried. My main criticism is that some of the magic could have been explained or teased out more (like the houses, how they operate/enact their magic, etc), because I felt those parts made me a bit lost.
