Striking, pitch-black comic novel, about a sheriff who presents himself as a genial halfwit but is in fact a ruthless maniac. Thompson was clearly an excellent writer and I'll look out for his other books. He fumbled the ending a bit though.
Absolutely terrible novel. I guess ‘Pop. 1280’ by Jim Thompson is a satire. Narrator Sheriff Nick Corey is a redneck. He hangs around other sheriffs who call black people the n-word. None of them believe black people have souls or are people. Nick treats women like Kleenex. He kills people or tricks people into killing each other chapter after chapter - all in good fun (not, seriously). He believes he was placed on Earth to entice and tempt folks to do their evil worst.
Everybody on Goodreads loves this book, but it is one of the worst books I have ever read in my life.

The world’s horniest sheriff wreaks havoc all over town. This was a funny and fast read!
I just imagined Woody Harrelson as the protagonist, and it gained a lotta clout with me.
The race relations were an unpleasant surprise, and seem out of place for 1964, but other than I quite enjoyed the story. Nick Corey is the worst, but still somehow likable. I didn’t see some of the twist coming. This is definitely a Jim Thompson book, so if you’re into his style, you’ll probably dig this one.
Pop 1280 is one of those books where you are dependent on narrators' view on what happens, even though you know that this description is not the whole truth. Book tells about county sheriff who has very peculiar view on his job and life in general. At first, the book seems to be a comedic description of clueless and lazy sheriff in small town who cares only of doing as little work as possible. After a while, the narrative gets more sinister tone when more of sheriff's worldview is revealed.
The strength of the book is it main character and I was surprised to find that book was written already in 60's, as it has somewhat modern feel. It reminds me of Deadwood TV series by setting and characters.

Dark and funny. Very pulpy. Going to read more Thompson.
