Not just a love story after the death of a loved one, but a love story while dealing with the stages of grief. How two strangers formed a bond with one another through phone calls helping one another overcome their fears and learning to feel alive again.
The primary character is a young widow, trying to work through her grief following the sudden loss of her husband. She regularly calls her deceased husband’s cellphone to hear his voicemail; however one day someone answers. Thus begins a beautiful friendship of shared grief and personal growth. Cute story and I enjoyed the narration on audiobook.

Thank you to William Morrow books for sending this book to me. The book started off kinda slow but it gradually became better and more interesting to read. Anna had recently lost her husband and she wasnt having much luck trying to move past his death. She wanted to hear his voice so would call his voicemail but one day she did and someone answered. Who could it be? Eventually she begins talking to this other person and they start making a connection and each being able to cope and get to talk to one another to get through hard and dark times. Overall good quick fast paced book! :)
Oh, my HEART! This. Book.
*sigh*
THE LAST GOODBYE is an achingly wonderful and sweet love story about moving forward and opening your heart after unimaginable loss. This book covers all facets of that grieving process: how it affects friendships, family relationships, romantic relationships, daily life, and one's mental and emotional health.
I loved these characters. Each of them is complex, human, and relatable. And the friendship turned love story is the sweetest sort of perfection.
I listened to this via audiobook and I liked the narrator when she read in narrative voice and as Anna, the main female character. I disliked her reading of the side characters, particularly those with accents and, most notably, her voicing of the male lead. It sounded oddly insincere and affected when she changed to that male voice.
BOOK REVIEW: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
AUDIO REVIEW: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
STEAM LEVEL: Rated G
TRIGGERS: fatal car accident, drunk driver, drowning, death of spouse, death of child, agoraphobia, anxiety attacks, cheating ex, estranged family

I don't think I was prepared for how emotional this book would be when I started reading it. It was a little overhwhelming, but I did enjoy the story with all the sadness. It was definelty more Women's Fiction for me, with a touch of romance. It does need to come with strong caution warnings for grief and loss of a child.
My heart broke several times while reading and listening to this one. I wanted to wrap both Anna and Brody up and keep them in a protected bubble to heal. The pace felt right, it was slower but it fit the story and drew out the emotions for me. The characters were developed well and I appreciated how the author drew me in and I became so invested in them.
This is the first book that I have listened to that was narrated by Antonia Beamish. I enjoyed her accent and felt she gave the characters just he right tone for the story. I would be happy to listen to another one of hers in the future.

3.5 stars.
I really enjoyed the premise of this book. Anna loses the love of her life, Spencer, and then one night randomly calls his cell phone to hear his voice. The number is reassigned so she gets a different person and then they start talking. That person has also endured a big loss so they connect through that and end up chatting without meeting each other for a long time.
The story was deep and meaningful and the ache of loss was well presented. I really enjoyed the narration as well.

This was a cute story of dealing with loss and grief. It's true that it's often times easier to talk to a complete stranger about what's going on in your life than the people who you are closest with.

I really enjoyed this read! Except maybe the end, but that’s probably just me. Everything else in the book was just a solid yes for me!
The Last Goodbye by Fiona Lucas was such a sweet book on grief and moving on. I really appreciated how Lucas showed different facets of grief and gave all of them equal weight. We may all process our grief differently but that doesn’t make any one’s any less valid. I also really liked how Lucas highlighted the fact that there really is no timeline when it comes to processing grief and moving on. Well-meaning people may try to push one to move on as soon as possible but if one isn’t ready, those efforts are just going to backfire. Plus, it was a lovely reminder that sympathy can only go so far. True empathy, however, can be very healing.
Balancing out all of that on an individual’s grief is the idea of how a loss is almost never experienced solo. A husband is also a son, a daughter is also a grandchild. While one may be wrapped up in one’s grief, it can be a good thing to look up every now and then to see that one is not the only one suffering.
Now, all of the above made the book a lovely read for me, so it was really sad when romance was shoehorned in. Personally, I would have much preferred for Brody and Anna to remain as each other’s emotional supports till they were ready to move on with their lives. You know, just like that saying about how some friends are just for a season. Honestly, their friendship was just based on so much trust and respect, it was perfect! Alas, romance was the route chosen for the book, so I guess it must be so.
