I listened to an Audible audiobook that had both Four Souls and Tracks, in that order. I wish I'd known to listen to them in chronological order instead, because knowing Fleur's history from Tracks adds a richness and satisfaction to Four Souls.

I enjoyed Four Souls, but I *really* liked Tracks. I liked the history, the tribal feuds, the old ways & medicine vs. new. I also enjoyed having a perhaps-unreliable narrator -- after Nanapush implies Pauline makes things up, I never knew whether or not to fully believe her part of the story. Seemed like that added a fun mental twist.

Will look forward to reading more in this series.

This is a bail for me. I just wasn’t connecting with it this time around, but I will probably give it another chance eventually. Erdrich’s writing is generally quite good. Under normal circumstances, I think I would have enjoyed this. Perhaps because this is a prequel and I haven’t read Love Medicine, or perhaps because of the magical realism elements which made me feel a bit distant from the characters, I just wasn’t feeling it.

Not since Marlon James', The Book of Night Women, have I read a book with so much raw energy and stark honesty, albeit well adorned in the ethereal trappings of native American culture. Moreover, the book is chockablock with complex and highly diverse female characters. A key one is one of the two narrators of the book's story, but even her essential, highly dramatic role is overshadowed by the stunning, unforgettable, Fleur. I will know America has reached a new level in recognizing the complexities of women in our society when Hollywood can make a faithful and successful movie based on this book. I'm very much looking forward to reading more books by this author.

I very rarely read about Indian Tribes and I have not read any other books in the series or by Louise Erdrich but now I badly want to read more. Her writing is superb and the content matter important and something I know very little about.
