This was a very disturbing but enjoyable horror novel. If you like the game Until Dawn you might enjoy this as well. With many twists and turns, it will keep you on your toes! For the last half of the book, I could not put it down. Although there were some spelling and grammar mistakes, I still thought it was really good. Will definitely be reading more horror next year

This book reads like it was written by a twelve year old boy. Now if that's your thing, more power to you, but it is not mine. When I think 'horror' I think of the artful way in which authors bring forth some of our darkest fears and force us to face them. Gratuitous levels of violence and gore do not a horror novel make. This novel plays heavily into shock factor instead of true horror, and it gets pretty boring pretty fast. The mystery of the town feels uncompelling and very tacked on, and it's grossly insensitive for the author to utilize the "scary mutant freaks with the mentality of children" trope to try to make the murderous hillbillies in the woods more frightening. All in all, this is the kind of book that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, and I sincerely wish I hadn't read it.

I find it hard to really enjoy horror books because at times they go off the wall. But I enjoyed this one from start to finish. The characters were fun even the evil female character was a twisted hoot. I was reminded of the hills have eyes some of the same premise. This was an easy read and I finished I record time.

Mesmerizing, horrifying, fantastic! I have no idea why his editors didn't want to publish this. It is a must read for those with a strong stomach. I'd of rated it 4.5 if I could of; having to choose between 4 or 5 stars I'd say it is closer to 5.

I read this book as part of a horror group read at Shelfari. I finished it back on July 5, but wanted to think on it a little bit before posting a review.

While I found this book to be a fun, fast paced read, I did find it to be a bit cliche. The hillbilly family 'thing' has been done and though this novel had a few original twists on that theme, I couldn't help still thinking about those cliches.
What I did like were the characters. They saved the day. Most especially Eleanor Roosevelt, the charming proprietress of the inn.
Many other reviews go into the plot, so I will just leave it at that and say that if you're looking for a fun thriller that doesn't tax the brain too much, (AND you like mutant redneck, hillbilly fun), this book could be the one for you.

As a thriller, this was fantastic. Great narrative energy, the characters more well-rounded than in your typical horror offering. The relationship between the three generations of women was great. The budding relationship between the disabled runner and the reporter was great. It would make a fantastic horror movie and was easy to visualize. One twist at the end was, well, a twist too far for me and made me roll my eyes. This is also definitely not for the sensitive reader. Highly recommended for horror fans.

***mild spoilers***

I have a small issue with the use of birth defects to horror effect. There was one passage where I could just imagine the writer trying to come up with a long list of things that could be wrong with the human body and it was a little distasteful.

People are disappearing from an inn in the middle of nowhere West Virginia. A family of deformed hillbillies, believing one of them is destined to be President one day, doing unspeakable things to the people who end up at the inn.

It is certainly creepy, and very gory. But it was not my favorite Jack Kilborn book. Things come together just a bit too easily, miraculous escapes not really explained. And somehow, all the characters know the names of the monsters chasing them, even though there are dozens of them?

It's fast-paced, and an easy read, but I'd suggest the other books from the series over this one.
