TERFs hate this book because they’re transphobic and weak. I (they/them) hate this book because it’s bad. We are NOT the same. 😤

A brutal look into how easily TERFs could spread their rhetoric, and just how far they really wish to take it. The horror in the violence and gore was explicit, yet somehow this book kept some levity. After all, what do we have if not the small pleasures and each other? Imagining how JKR died a horrid death was fun.

5 stars because I'll be thinking about this one for a long time. I mean, yes, sometimes my toes were quite literally curling at some of violence/body horror, since that's not always my taste, and while I get that everyone is looking for release and escape from this difficult world they find themselves in, wow is everyone horny, but fine. If everyone and everything is trying to kill you somehow, you gotta get that good feeling where you can. I'm not judging, even if I'm an old who'd probably be more interested in stealing sleep where I could.

But all that gory detail is sort of... refreshing, in a way? I tire of apocalyptic stories that dance around the bone-deep difficulty of staying alive and instead focus on, I dunno, trite romance and neat labels. All the characters in this book are complicated and allowed to be difficult. Why should these trans women be some sort of model minority just because they are the protagonists? They have far bigger things to worry about — like feral man-creatures, militarized TERF gangs, and "I'm one of the good ones!" cis girls who would sell you to Satan for a proverbial corn chip. Damn, just give a gal a crossbow and let's get moving.

Despite some lagging in the plot, the characterization and world-building is phenomenal, and the exploration of gender politics and transphobia is nuanced and unabashed.

This book gave me literal nightmares when I first started reading it. The writing is so vivid and the concept so realistic that the horror comes less from the gore or sickening TERFs and more from how this world that’s written about is not so far off what we have now — snarling, rape-y men included.

Make sure to check the trigger warnings!!!

I found it quite jumpy at times and was not expecting it to be as smutty as it was. That’s biggest gripe. I feel like so much of this story could have been told without the sex (I don’t love smut in any of my stories fwiw). So if you’re not a smut reader, I would not enthusiastically recommend Manhunt

Fran and Beth and Robbie and Indi’s internal stories were heartbreaking and they all deserved better in this shitty world.

Wow this book is a trip! If you're mad at toxic cis men and terfs, then this book is super cathartic. If you're trans and fragile, then be warned that there is a lot of trauma here. Like. So. Much. Trauma. Queer zombie apocalypse tho, very early 2000s vibes.
