There was a lot of focus in reviews on how gruesome this book is - and I agree that if you have a low tolerance for gore/sexual violence/disgust you will not like this book - but given that context I found this book to be surprisingly sweet and sincere. There's definitely a lot of gross stuff and vivid descriptions of horror, but at the heart of the story are really well-drawn characters and their complex relationships. The writing is really great, both in creating vivid horror, but also in quickly sketching - and later filling out - the complex tensions of long-time relationships under strain. Excellent, smart world building that worries about science just the right amount while never compromising the creative vision of the world or getting too pedantic. Singular and definitely among my top 5% of books I've read in the last few years.

Dropped it as I found it to be poorly paced. I really wished the author just got straight to the point regarding the plot. 

Also Fran and Robbie having sex after Beth got raped by that feral man did not sit right with me like hello?

This book just did not hold my interest. I found myself skimming at the end which is something I almost never do. But i just was not engaged in the story and found following the plot (particularly the time jumps) to be very confusing.

Really a 3 1\2. I enjoyed it, the writing was spectacular. The only reason it isn't A four star was due to it being a lot more graphic than I originally realized. This is great, but make sure you read up on the trigger warnings.
