This book was both beautiful and ugly. Such a powerful read that will haunt you for a long time.

A heartbreaking and tragic story that's told with the seriousnes the subject matter demands without feeling heavy handed, preachy, or like cruelty porn.  It's not without hope either, which helps through some of the darker parts.

4.5 stars -This was amazing! I only wish we could’ve gotten a little bit more with the ending.... there’s a lot of things left unsaid but should’ve been

It's strange because the facts behind "The Nickel Boys" are so interesting and largely traumatic that I thought this novel would surely be a harrowing read. However, I found myself feeling that it was largely impersonal and while the cruelty, abuse, and horror are portrayed, they are never too affecting. I thought that this was quite a misstep as it could have been much more emotional. Nevertheless, I appreciated learning about this horrid piece of very real history, and the lessons to take away from it are tremendous.
