I read this special edition after absolutely loving the original book. Reading through this book with many questions already answered from the previous read, I fell in love with it all over again. The bonus chapters gave some context/resolution without fleshing everything out. I still don't agree with every choice each character made but this book still devastates me in the most beautiful way whenever I read it.

The depth of feeling in this book stuck me in a way lots of my 5* reads don’t. One of the author’s love for the setting really bled through the pages. The way they captured teenage infatuation and the early, gentle stages of young relationships was brilliant. Grief was a constant companion throughout and I was desperate to find out more about Duncan and the first fallout of Macy and Elliot’s relationship.

The beginning and almost over the first half of the book is really sweet and I really liked it.  Their romance was very sweetly developed in my opinion and it did feel  very accurate for teenagers, so that might have been a 4 stars BUT something happend towards the end and the way the conflict was handled and not adressed was just really bad. It's a horrendous thing to happen and they do not talk about it instead they cling to each other and the remnants of their childhood in a very codependent way and it just left a really sour taste

This book started pretty strong for me but I was pretty frustrated by the end. The soulmate angle was way too strong for my personal taste and I didn’t find the climax or resolution very satisfying.
I also felt like the book did not really acknowledge that what Emma did to Elliot was rape. Considering that male victims of sexual violence already get dismissed as it is, this didn’t sit right with me.

I loved it.

It does have a problematic element in the book (look up trigger warnings if needed), but the characters were so lovable and I was enamored with their love story. It established its place as one of my favorite romances.
