As always, a pleasure to read

when true love is destroyed horror comes along

4.5/5

Almost all of the characters are terrible and the relationships toxic, but the storytelling and writing is gorgeous. Part of the point of the book seems to be that those characters are complex, but the reader does not and cannot side by them.

This is not a romance novel. The characters are too self-absorbed, abusive, and greedy to be in love. While there may be some very poetic and quotable lines relating to love, this book is not about romance to envy or try to replicate. It is a ghost story of obsession, madness, and misery. Overall, a hauntingly beautiful tale.

Absolutely excellent! I'm seeing character development in a whole new light. Unlike anything I've ever read before.

Kinda boring

I found this book to be disturbing and sad overall. In a way, though, it was a comforting, slow read. I thoroughly enjoyed the poetic prose of Bronte. This is my first Bronte book. I will try Jane Erye next and hope that it is more uplifting than this one. The four stars is for the writing style and not so much for the story itself. Although the story was a tragedy for the most part, it was an enjoyable read between the print and audio book. The narrators were very good.
