Each book seems to be getting better. The characters and the world are now established more firmly, and while I thought book 1 was slow, once you get to book four, it's hard to put down!

It’s a good middle grade series, full of dark themes and (some) magic which I always enjoy. There are 13 books in the series so I’m not sure how far I’ll make it considering I’ve only read 4 in 8 years…

J’avais oubliée à quel point l’introduction de Grimalkin était bonne! C’est mon personnage favoris de la série et j’ai hâte de me plonger dans le prochain tome

"Things are certainly getting darker."

I really enjoy this series. The adventures of Tom and The Spook are fascinating. I love the idea of Tom being the apprentice for The Spook and learning the trade through experience. I also love the layers of witches - and that they all wear pointy shoes!

Alice is such a good addition to the story and I hope she stays around for a long time
Spoiler I need to remember the prophecy that Tibbs relayed: I see a girl, soon to be a woman. The girl who will share your life. She will love you, she will betray you, and finally she will die for you." Was this Mab?? or will this be Alice?!
We learn of the covens and families of the witches in the neighboring town and how they have been a danger that is growing and growing. The Spook was right a book or 2 ago when he said he needed to deal with the thread - it's bad now.

I was sad for some of the things that happened in the story (especially to those close to Tom) but I found the mark that Mab couldn't release the most fascinating! Go Alice! I will definitely read the next one!

I really like this series. Tom, for all that he is only 13 years old, has a lot on his plate as the apprentice to the Spook. He's come a long way since being apprenticed per his mother's wishes, but still has far to go. There are still mysteries that he is discovering along with his growing abilities. He has to fight the prejudices and fears of townsfolk everywhere he goes. He wants to listen to his instincts but worries that they may lead him astray. Who can he trust?
He and the Spook and Tom's friend, Alice, have to fight the growing number of witches who are gathering to bring the Fiend up from below. It may be a losing battle.
I can definitely recommend this series to anyone who likes YA, fantasy, a good story.

Book four of the series is darker still and a fun and enjoyable read - Things get more intense for our apprentice and now he has to try to stop three covens of witches from joining powers to raise a demon from his prison -

I would say that the only thing that I found strange was that the character seems older than his age - at 14, he is a strong hero, but acts like he is closer to 18 - not a huge deal, because as we grow up physically, we grow up mentally as well - So, Tom is mentally older than his body I guess

Tom Ward faces a great challenge - I will also say that this is the first book that ends with many things left unfinished - now it is becoming a series of, 'but, you must read the next book' - not a horrible thing, because these are fun reads, but don't require someone to continue to learn what happens next - leave a tease -

Anyway, this is an enjoyable read, and the series is still going along quite well.
