4.5 rounded down.

Given the plot blurb, I had no idea this would a cozy fantasy. It took me over a month to read it due to the slow pacing, so I had to knock it down half a star for the mid-book reading slump it put me through. However, the pacing at the end really picks back up and I read 40% of it within a couple hours.

I loved the world building. I found it thoughtful and intentional without being overly complicated or grandiose. We learn little by little what makes the isle special and magical. There are definitely still questions I have about the magic system and other fantastical elements, but I hope the final book in the duology will clear some things up. Even if it doesn't, I'm still satisfied in my current understanding of the world.

There were quite a few character lines that we get to follow. Each character has a very satisfying arc without eclipsing their counterparts'.

I really enjoyed the cozy vibes once I realized that's what it was going for! I've already started A Fire Endless to wrap up this duology by the end of the month!

a solid novel. wildly atmospheric, and very Scottish.

This book was so dreamy. I love that Jack is a harpist and that his music summons the spirits. That concept was very unique. I was mesmerized by this novel.

I think Moray’s motive to be the kidnapper wasn’t strong enough, so that was weird. Also, towards the end of the book, I wish I was reading more about Jack. I need more music content. I can’t wait for book 2!

this was an objectively good fantasy book with many things to fawn over, yet there were moments when it was somewhat hard for me to get into the story because of its slow pacing….. still a very solid story though and I’m definitely excited for the sequel!
