I intend to read this again, so I can work through the steps laid out in my own. This is a useful book that has a lot that I could learn from. It was also really affirming because sometimes I think maybe I’m too harsh about whether my mom is a narcissist but like, then I go through a questionnaire and score a 27 out of 33 and also, read paragraphs here that feel like someone just wrote down my childhood.
Really valuable!

This book was very helpful; especially the last third. On one hand I realized that my family & parent tapes aren't so bad! On the other, I gained understanding of what my relationship with my mother/parents lacks and was able to learn how to make peace with that and still have a relationship with them. I thought the authors book & principles related a lot to John Bradshaw's Homecoming book & video series. Although Bradshaw did most of that work in the 80s the information has been helpful and insightful.
This was definitely a book I wish I had read 10 years ago - however, it's a bit outdated for 2022 and also tbh for me on my recovery journey. The relationship section only discusses straight relationships and one entire chapter uses MTV Cribs a reference point (lol). I would still recommend this to people who are only just starting the recovery work in therapy or who maybe are only just now realizing they grew up with a narcissistic parent but def not for anyone who already is there.

This is a great starting point, I still wish it could go more in depth as to how to heal and what to watch out for in our own behavior.
This was a tough one to work through and it took me a few months of reading it on and off. I'm really glad I did it though. While some of the phrasing seems a bit outdated and some of the exercises a bit much, I very much appreciated the ideas in this book. I think they'll be incredibly helpful and fall among the end of the spectrum of self-help that I think I can come back to - aka not something that could've just been a leaflet but ended up being a book.

Ouchie.
Super great book, very informative and insightful. Made me cry a lot and has helped me (start to) come to terms with my relationship to my own mother. McBride’s writing style is simple, yet beautiful and does a good job of getting her point across.
There’s definitely some outdated or woo-woo parts I didn’t enjoy as much, but there weren’t that many of them and they didn’t really detract from the overall message and usefulness of the book.
In short, excellent read for people with narcissistic mothers who are trying to improve their lives.

This is such an incredible book that really provided a lot of insight and lots of good tips and writing prompts.
This is a book I feel that I should keep coming back to. I took my time reading it, but I feel that it needs multiple reads.
Gaining understanding and helping to reinforce the ideas.
Im looking forward to reading other books by this author and continuing to work on myself.
