I think these are the best written MCs of the series.

"It is rare to find someone who works toward what is meaningful to them, instead of only waxing poetic about what needs to change.”

I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about the Mages of the Wheel series. I’m obsessed. Every time I finish a book, I think I’ve just met my favorite characters. Then the next one starts, and I forget the last (I mean…not really, but...). Siren & Scion was no different. I’m enamored with Amara and Cassian.

J.D. Evans writes characters with such depth. We’re slowly let in, layer by layer, until we fully share their hopes, fears, heartaches, and longings.

Amara is intelligent, ambitious, and compassionate. She’s confident, knows how to play the political game, and still strives to uplift others.

“Too many think it is a compliment to elevate one at the expense of others. I find it repugnant. If you cannot compliment me for something that is mine, instead of taking away from other women, then do not bother at all.” 👏👏👏

Cassian is another cunning yet reverent male lead, which Evans writes so well.

“I also know the lies that trauma tells a mind, to give itself a warm home to live in, to warp the truth into a cage.” He touched her wrist. “I don’t have the key to your cage, Princess. But you can open it from the inside. You could let me sit in there with you.” 😭

Both are wounded. Both are guarded. And both choose to let each other in. (Hello one of the best love scenes ever!) 🔥

Beyond their relationship, I was practically sobbing over the fierce loyalty of their companions and the ways they all care for one another. Djar and Peio are two of my faves.

This installment feels less plot-heavy and more character-driven than the first two, but the world Evans has created keeps growing more vivid as the threads from earlier books all weave together.

On to book 4!

This book added so much plot and overall world building and I love it all. It was great to see a new part of the world, and get introduced to a whole new set of very lovable characters. Loved learning about the Suloi, and hope we get more of that later.

Only took off .25 because I do think this one could’ve used a bit of an edit, it did feel fairly slow in parts.

I desperately want to enjoy this series more, but each book after the first has let me down a little. I liked the way trauma was handled, and the littl  bit of powerful women helping less powerful women bits. The politics were interesting, this book is a bit more return to form of the first. We dont get insta-lust and we have a bit more world building than the second book.

However, the romance was a bit odd for me. They didn't really seem into each other at all, besides a refreshingly cursory admittance of each others attractiveness, till about halfway through when they both decided they were going to do something about it. I just felt like the lead up wasn't very well done.

And each subsequent book makes me dislike the Sultana from the first book more and more, which is an incredible disappointment. I really enjoyed her character in the first one, but each book shes either extremely cold/blind to the reality of a situation, or maddeningly unable to do anything about that damned Grand Vizer. I despise how much he blatantly gets away with. The whole premise of this book is a promise the sultana makes to Amara, but then when Amara succeeds and even goes above and beyond, somehow the whole council is able to reject what the sultana promised. If the sultana cannot have the power to keep promises, she should not make them. It's infuriating.

I am enjoying this series so much. The dynamics of this couple are so good, and I enjoyed this one way more than the previous book. The prose remains beautiful, even though I unfortunately saw two typos in my copy. Regardless, I'll definitely continue the series.
