Ellie Holcomb was walking through a difficult season with a friend, trying to help her combat the lies she was hearing and believing. Ellie knew that her friend needed to hear truth, and that the best truth of all comes from Scripture. The two women began memorizing verses together, claiming God’s words as their “fighting words when the enemy [would come] to kill, steal, and destroy.” Together the women began to experience the changes God’s Word can bring when we invite Him into our lives. Though their circumstances didn’t changed, God’s Word changed them “from the inside out because it gave [them] solid ground to stand on when the shame storms started rolling in.”

In this collection of devotionals, Ellie shares one hundred separate passages from Scripture that have become her personal fighting words. Each devotional includes a short Scripture followed by stories of how the verse has been meaningful for Ellie and can apply to our lives, too. Every daily reading wraps up with a few reflection questions and a prayer. I loved the format of this book that was pure Scripture study (and not all that different from my own monthly Bible verse blog posts!). Ellie’s writing is conversational and relatable, with stories that might have been pulled from my own life, and wonderful insights into God’s precious Word and the meaning it holds for us today. Many of the devotionals reference Ellie’s songs (she is best known as a singer/songwriter) and I enjoyed hearing the origin stories of songs I already love.

Some of the devotionals within the book were truly outstanding, and I will always remember them when I come across the correlating verses in my Bible reading in the future. Other devotionals didn’t completely resonate with me, and I wasn’t always entirely on board with the specific interpretations or application of some passages. Mostly, this was a fantastic read and a refreshing daily infusion of God’s Truth. This would be an excellent starting point for women new to Scripture and wanting to begin memorizing and understanding God’s Word; even as a seasoned believer I found hope, encouragement, and important Truth through this book.

My Rating: 4.5 Stars (Rounded to 4 Stars on Goodreads) // Book Format: Kindle

Fighting Words: 100 Days of Speaking Truth into Darkness by Ellie Holcomb is the latest study book I completed with Proverbs 31 Ministries Online Bible Studies group. This book provided 100 days of effective verses from the Bible with commentary from Ellie Holcomb that served as a bite-sized, daily devotional.

While the content each day was a quick read, it did require some reflection on how the greater message could be applied to one’s life. In addition to being an author, Holcomb is also a songwriter, and she included some of the lyrics to her songs in the book. I though this added value for people who enjoy music and are auditory learners. Holcomb did note early on in her book that she would be including the information about her songs but didn’t want to come across as trying to push album sales. I certainly did not get that feeling by reading her book as the tactic was not overdone.

As with most books I read via the free P31 OBS program, I gained so much more by having a community of women who were learning alongside me. Being part of the Facebook group added another layer of depth for this study.

Recommendation: As always, Proverbs 31 picks powerful, life-changing books, and Fighting Words did not disappoint. Whether you read this book in 100 consecutive days or pick it up as time allows, you will be changed. Go snag your copy of this Bible-based today!

Until next time ... Read on!

Regardless of whether I purchase a book, borrow a book, or receive a book in exchange for review, my ultimate goal is to

I really enjoyed this book! It is broken up into 100 sections ideally to be read over 100 days. Each section highlights one "fighter verse" and then has a page or two with a short devotional that ends with a few questions and a prayer.

Not only is the cover beautiful, but there are beautifully illustrated verses inside as well as pages left blank for notes.

This book would make a great gift and would be a perfect coffee table / nightstand book.

Thanks to Netgalley and B&H Publishing Group I was able to read this book before it was released. It will be available on Oct 15, 2021 for purchase.

I almost never read women's devotionals, because I expect them to be fluffy, vaguely uplifting books that I don't relate to. However, because Ellie Holcomb's music has been such a blessing to me over the past four years, I was interested to read a devotional from her perspective. This isn't a conventional women's devotional at all, because it focuses deeply on specific Scripture passages that Holcomb recommends memorizing, and on how the Bible can speak truth into our doubts, struggles, and fears. Although Holcomb writes in a conversational style and shares examples from her life, she ties these reflections directly into the Bible verse or passage for the day, rather than just sharing a story. She also shares life illustrations from a variety of different stages of her life, rather than just talking about marriage or parenting.

Fighting Words Devotional: 100 Days of Speaking Truth into the Darkness is a great resource for women and teenage girls, regardless of their specific background or life experiences. Because Holcomb delves into Scripture rather than just sharing life lessons through the lens of her experience, this book is full of insight for readers regardless whether they identify with Holcomb's specific illustrations, and each daily reading concludes with open-ended reflection questions and a written prayer. Also, even though Holcomb specifically addresses women, much of the content applies regardless of gender, and a man who wants guidance with Scripture memory or who is a fan of Holcomb's music shouldn't let the female-focused marketing deter him.

Also, speaking of Holcomb's music, she explains at the beginning of the book that if a reader isn't familiar with her as a recording artist, she doesn't want them to feel like she is trying to sell them her albums. She explains that when she quotes from her own song lyrics, she is essentially just sharing journal-like reflections, not trying to convince anyone that they need her songs in their life. However, if someone is interested in this because they appreciate her music, the book lives up to the kind of personal, gospel-focused, and encouraging content they would expect, and I enjoyed recognizing refrains I have sung over and over again tied in with the Scriptures that inspired them. I really appreciated this, and even though I read through it quickly for review purposes, I plan to reread the devotional over the intended one hundred days someday in the future.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
