This book is very self-indulgent, but the authors admit that right up front. Basically, they cover the careers and biographies of their favorite American "roots rock" or "alt.country" artists, and then pontificate on what makes them special. For what it is, it's not bad, it just never moves past being what it is. (Does that make any sense?)

This is a good place to start looking at some of these artists (Gram Parsons, Lucinda Williams, Delaney & Bonnie, etc.), but most of the overviews are pretty superficial. There are some interesting stories, but by its nature the whole book just skims the surface. As a jumping off point it's pretty good, but don't expect too much depth.
