It was a decent but not compelling read.
Similar to a lot of dystopian society novels floating around lately only set in a spaceship - I recently read Flawed which is not set in a spaceship and found it similar only this book is less frantic. The setup takes a long time and then the book ends very abruptly in what I can only assume is meant as a cliff hanger but left me more mildly aggravated than full of anticipation for a future book.
If you like this type of book - YA crossed lovers dystopian society you may enjoy this book. The cover is gorgeous and decorative and the read is adequate without being amazing - so you might find it worth your money.

I received an eARC edition of this book courtesy of Hachette Children’s Group via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Either I’m being really harsh on books this year, or they’re just not good books because quite frankly this was yet another slight let down (yet of lesser proportions than my previous reads, seeing as I did like quite a few things about it).
I loved the sci-fi, spacey twist on the dystopian genre… Yes, I did just say that I liked a dystopian book
I really liked the aspect of the lack of freedom for once, well, maybe not “liked” but definitely found the fact that people would sign their descendants up for a lifetime of what was basically slavery to a REALLY corrupt political system IN SPACE interesting. I just couldn’t completely comprehend why on earth (shameless pun) anyone would put up with some of the things happening on that ship. I think that the sci-fi twist on the typical same ol’ dystopia was really what I needed to warm up to the genre which has been an interesting discovery.
However, the book also had elements which really really annoyed me, like the ever present love triangle, which I could smell a mile off after the MC decided to descibe a guy’s moles upon their second encounter, after already being engaged to another man as per dystopian tradition. Which of course led to an overly dramatic and plot consuming insta-love/lust story which was put into the spotlight by the absence/flatness of supporting characters.
Although admittedly, this got slightly more bearable as the book went on and we met a few characters and also discovered more about some of the main(er) ones which was quite nice to see as that doesn’t happen very often at all in dystopian novels so big kudos to Ling for not forgetting to develop her story beyond the MC.
In saying that, I felt as though the main character, and Ezra and Dom were slightly immature and definitely fell a bit flat. However, the ending of the book was pleasing and it definitely provided a lot of hope for the next book to be slightly more fast-paced and action filled which would be something to look forward to.
Overall, I’d definitely say that this book is worth reading if you’d like to see something new brought into the dystopian genre, I honestly really liked the idea of sci-fi being such a key part of this story. The writing style and really well written and thought-out description were also great strength of this particular title.
My Rating: 2.5 Stars

First, the good because despite my seemingly low rating, there were things I enjoyed.
By far my favourite thing about this book was the setting - the idea of people being essentially locked down on a ship hurdling through space without much of a say in a 700 years mission really appealed to me. There were some really interesting points to the system they lived by (e.g. the Breeding System) but there were a few places where the setting could have been better explained and/or expanded on to add even more layers to the story.
Another thing I enjoyed was the writing which flipped between being really great to being a bit too cheesy for my taste. And that's purely because the main protagonist, Seren, went from being very immature in her speech to being almost lyrical in next. That being said, there were some really great passages about her life and thirst for freedom.
I think the place where this book truly suffered was the romance. I'm a sucker for romance; I'm even more of a sucker for a well written romance. This sadly was a romance that developed way too fast for my taste. Seren sees Dom once and it's lust-at-first-sight. It didn't make much sense to me though their relationship got better the more we got into the book.
I'm still unsure how I felt about the ending. Although, I feel like there is a lot of room for a second book that could expand more on the story and the characters. Overall, a quick and pleasant read that suffered from a bad case of insta-love with too little of an engaging plot besides the romance.

It had potential to be so good, but everything just felt rushed and too melodramatic for my tastes.
Seren is 16 and lives on the spaceship Ventura, which has been on its way to the Epsilon Eridani galaxy for the last 84 years. She was born on the Ventura und only knows life on Earth from stories, pictures, movies and books. The journey is expected to take another several hundred years and hers and everybody else’s purpose on the Ventura is to guarantee the success of the mission. Which is why Seren knows that she will never escape this “tin can”, as she calls the Ventura, with all of its rules, she will never know what it’s like to feel the warmth of the sun on her skin. I think it’s safe to say, that Seren is not very happy with her life on the Ventura.
“I mean, what is the point in reading about a real life in a world that for all we know doesn’t even exist any more, when all there really is or will ever be is this place?”
“Then we all write stupid messages on each other’s T-shirts as if all the time we wasted in this little room actually meant anything of any real relevance, …”
But then she meets Dom and for the first time ever she feels that spark of hope for a better, happier life. When she is with him she can finally forget about her fears and sorrows, at least for a little while. But the more time they spend together, the more dangerous it gets for both of them. Seren soon has to make a decision which may not only risk her own happiness, but the life of her true love as well.
I loved this one. It's an exciting story in space that really makes you think about certain aspects of life. I feel like you might get disappointed if you’re looking for super developed characters. The book doesn’t give a lot of information or details about the characters. I feel like you also don’t get to know Seren and Dom very well.
However, I didn’t really mind this time since I was mostly reading the book because it is set in space. And I still hoped and feared with the characters, especially in the second half of the book.
If you read and enjoyed the Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff or the Across The Universe series by Beth Revis, then I would definitely recommend to read The Lonelines Of Distant Beings as well.
