Cute premise works well for the Franklin U series

I do like a romance where there's a dumb bet that ends up coming back biting the person making it on the backside.

Here it's Frat Boy Cory who's one of the most charismatic - and nice to give him his dues - guys on campus.

He gets into a spat with one of the science geeks who live next door and finds himself fascinating by Spencer.

What follows is a super sweet at times journey into discovering opposites can do more than just attract, they can work in surprisingly ways.

I wasn't sure at first about a couple of the encounters which take place somewhat unawares and a bit voyeuristic but it was short lived and I felt it moved on in an interesting way.

Both young men have their vulnerabilities and their strengths and the narrative unfolds nicely as they come to slowly learn more about each other and spend time together.

As it's a Neve book, the sexy times are as hot as you'd expect, but also they begin to ge tempered with more honest feelings as the weeks move on.

When the big crisis point happens it hits hard for them both and there's no easy way through it.

Cory has to work hard for Spencer's forgiveness and he does it by proving he listened to all his geeky conversations about things that matter to him.

There's a cute Epilogue set a year and a bit later which gives a very solid HFN that has great potential to turn into a true HEA.

This book started out not great, leaning on some really troubling tropes, but recovered by the end. I'm not a fan of building a relationship on a bet, and then "forgetting" the bet/not walking it back. Also not a fan of the sexual assault and victim blaming of "well he obviously wanted it because of X". There's also some plot armour with a random person communicating gossip. There's a lot of problematic elements.

By the end most of these issues were overcome in some way, and they seemed cute together. It's unfortunate that the story had to take such a terrible rout to get there. The book maintains a light-hearted tone even through the problematic parts.

Vibes: Sadly, I did not feel like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman except for the whole hooker thing.
