Pretty funny story. The male lead comes off as kind of pathetic in many ways, but I believe that is part of the humour.

I generally enjoyed the anime but like that, it takes a bit to get into and to really know the characters and even by the end, I didn’t feel like I fully understood the leads, if anything, I understood and liked the side characters more. I hope that’s different in the manga and we get more emotional vulnerability in the leads throughout the series.

Though the scenes are short and inherently fast-paced, the actual development of the characters feels pretty slow and the forming of a cohesive story is slow paced in my mind

This review will be for the whole series; read at your own risk!

Read 12 volumes

I read volume 1 ages ago and must have forgotten to review… well I read book 2 today and I still like it! It’s a comedy of errors in a way with the two genius idiots trying to get the other to confess their feelings. I hope they do eventually get together because I don’t know if I can read this whole series without them actually getting together.

Edit 7/15/22: This story is so stupid but in an entertaining way. I know I'll keep reading but I'm getting them from the library now.

I thought it would be a fantasy but it’s a contemporary romance and I’m not about that right now so it’s entirely a me thing.

There is something deeply, deeply stupid about this manga. A student council president and Vice President are both very much in love with each another, but they’re too prideful and embarrassed to confess to one another. As a result, both parties continually engineer plots to force the other person to confess to them and, in the process, “submit” to them, admitting that they’re the party that cares more.

Their attempts are both massively pathetic and hysterically relatable at the same time. Although one can’t help but look down on them, there’s something about the innocence of their attempts, that belief that who confesses first is key to the power dynamics of a relationship that strikes a familiar chord within us. Who can forget the fear of confession, and the excuses we make along the way to avoid it?

However, what’s incredibly ironic is that their attempts to seduce one another just go to show how much both of them care about one another. In their numerous plots to outwit the other party, both individuals reveal how dedicated they are to the love they share and how much they understand the person they love. It seems impossible that the avoidance of confession could be the most devout expression of love. Yet, paradoxically, this is the case. At the same time, one cannot help but wonder how much happier the two lovers would be if they simply confessed to one another... or is this simply a more blissful alternative, a romantic, lingering memory of puppy love as compared to the pain of inevitable heartbreak?

I’ve probably detracted from my Main Point, but overall, this was a really sweet manga and I suppose I’ll look forward to reading the other volumes ?_! We shall see.

Edit: Kaguya’s jealous nature is also sadly relatable sigh sndnfnnc and the dude’s desperation to get all those stupid riddles right was ALSO very relatable... foolishness in general is very relatable to me and perhaps to most !_! and hence I want a boyfriend I guess time to be sad again

The first book that made me laugh in 2024! Absolutely love how comedically well done this manga. Every chapter is a small story about our main characters figuring out how to win each others heart, love it! <3
