Author is such a prick. I would not like to meet him. Boring book. Maybe if you have not been outside for a few years and long for nature. Still should be better to take a walk in a forest than read this.

The writing was incredibly pretty but a lot of the time none of it really stuck. I've had this problem before with pretty writing. Sometimes it can be so embroidered that the underlying message gets lost. If you can imagine the words are floating past in colorful swirls and patterns. For the most part you can make out what they're saying but you can't necessarily always piece together what they're all meant to be saying collectively. This might just be my problem and when it does snap into focus it's beautiful.

Thematically it sort of straddled the line between pragmatic and philosophical. I would have preferred a little more adherence to one or the other but that is a small complaint. Actually going in I was looking forward to the more pragmatic side, the actual labor of the experiment, but as he started waxing poetic on the power and beauty of solitude and independence he won me over. Then he would suddenly switch back and talk about how deep the lake was or where people kept ice in the summer and break the spell.

this took me a MONTH to finish because thoreau has the proclivity to blabber on (however charmingly and knowledgeably) about an obscure bird of the Concord forests whom he had the greatest privilege of getting acquainted with during his two years of stay there. what he accomplished is something i aspire to reach even the smallest first step of. he presented his musings and arguments with incredible experience-backed and thorough justifications (thoreau thorough) and his descriptions of nature deny no level of respect and love thoreau holds towards wildlife. this could be my bible, with the breadth as well as depth of topics he covers with his essays. truly a respectable author and human being, this has motivated me to connect more deeply with nature and live by some of the profound quotes i’ve found in the book.

Can I say I was a little disappointed? I expected great things and got some. A great book in concept but probably went into it thinking it was more wop wops and less lifestyle block. Though in saying that, Thoreau’s approach to life it to be admired and some of the passages make for great reading.
To be read again.
