I felt like the first two books of this series really took some chugging along to get started. However, starting with this third book I felt like the series had finally hit its stride. With true court intrigue, spies, magic, and left-over historical/arcane riddles we finally see our characters challenged and personalized at the same time.

3.75 because it took so long for everything to happen.
But when it did happen, boy did it happen.
But when it did happen, boy did it happen.

The third Doctrine of Labyrinths book has much the same style as its predecessors, unsurprisingly. It does include a third viewpoint character, but the main difference that stood out to me is that the plot of this book is much more vague. There's a lot of the same interpersonal conflicts, with plenty of characters making mistakes and misunderstanding one another, but they're mostly just living their lives, not pursuing some larger goal. I still enjoyed it, but I certainly wondered through some of it where we were heading. By the end there's some action, and certainly there's plenty of unresolved issues for the fourth book. Not quite as good as the first two, but I still enjoyed this one.

While enjoyable for much the same reason as its predecessors, the pacing was somewhat slow and the main thrust of the plot not always clear.

This is the third book in Monette's series. Felix and his younger brother Mildmay have returned to the Mirador, where court politics and dark magic are once again complicating their already complicated lives. All the main characters' love lives are complicated and fucked up, *of course*, and I enjoy it but it does get a bit old. I hope that the next novel has more action and less moping.

Sarah Monette does it again. Up till 2am last night, then in the comfy chair all afternoon today. Less gut-wrenching than the previous two novels, but moves the plot forward at a much more rapid pace. Also, a new narrator is added, surprisingly effectively.

Loved it, again! But I feel like once again the ending was very rushed. The majority of the book was slow paced and not too much really exciting happened, and then we get to the last 10% and Everything Happens At Once!!
Graphic: Chronic illness and Grief
Moderate: Mental illness, Sexual violence, Torture, and Violence
