In order to prevent his son from going down the same dark path he did, a blind poet must tell his son about his secret life as a mobster. A fantastic true story about a Chicago mobster who was blinded during a heist and later shared a prison cell with famous murderer Nathan Leopold.
This book is a graphic novel, but it’s so smart and literary. There are explorations into philosophical discussions of Nietzsche, Dante’s Inferno, and Plato’s Cave Analogy, but it struck a perfect balance of explaining things to the ignorant reader while not talking down to the readers who already knew the concepts. It was very thought provoking and educational in a fun way.
The art was very detailed black and white ink drawings, and each panel was so well designed. The production was incredible. The only thing I didn’t love was the length and pacing. I had to take a few breaks because the story was so dense.
I received a copy of this ebook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Lovely story about familial relationships, friendship, true crime, and poetry, all based on the story of Matt Rizzo and his son Charlie, who grew up thinking his mild-mannered father who spent all his free time studying classic poetry lost his eyesight as a child in a hunting accident.
It is only as a teen in legal limbo that Charlie learns his father was actually blinded in a Depression-era robbery gone wrong and that dad built several years in prison, with infamous thrill killer Nathan Leopold (of Leopold and Loeb fame) as a cellmate and eventual friend.
I would never have known about this if a former professor hadn't recommended it to be, but I am so glad she did. I usually don't like graphic novels because I often don't like the art styles used, but the illustrations in this are stunning. Between that, the fascinating story, and the well-drawn characters, it's an excellent read.

This incredible true story of crime and punishment, family and secrets, explores a troubled father-son relationship, brutal mid-20th-century prison systems, blindness, the life of the mind, and a friendship with notorious killer Nathan Leopold! The richly detailed drawings enhance both the gritty realism as well as the symbolic and philosophical touches in the narrative. Shocking, truthful, and redemptive; fans of Maus, Persepolis, and Epileptic should gobble this up.
